We never thought we would see a day when Body Clock research would win a Nobel Prize. It definitely should but still a surprise. It is especially odd to read press for a Nobel Prize in Medicine that contains language like “when our bodies should secrete hormones in harmony with the Earth’s revolutions” or “chronic misalignment between our lifestyle and the rhythm dictated by our inner timekeeper is associated with increased risk for various diseases.” This has been evident for millennia and science is catching up.

TheNobel Prize in Medicine today was awarded to 3 scientists—Jeffrey C. Hall, PhD; Michael Rosbash, PhD; and Michael W. Young, PhD—who collectively discovered the genes that control circadian rhythm, the “body clock” that tells us when to eat and sleep, and when our bodies should secrete hormones in harmony with the Earth’s revolutions.

While the work is groundbreaking in its own right—telling us everything from how the body’s metabolism runs to how we behave—the choice shows how the Nobel Committee always has one eye on current events. For the second straight year, the winning science has implications on chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, which are top concerns of the World Health Organization.

“Our well-being is affected when there is a temporary mismatch between our external environment and this internal biological clock; for example when we travel across several time zones and experience jet lag,” the statement from the institute said. “There are also indications that chronic misalignment between our lifestyle and the rhythm dictated by our inner timekeeper is associated with increased risk for various diseases.”

Holistic Health — Rhythm and Balance

Traditional Chinese Medicine (and other healing art forms) has long incorporated a “clock” that divides the day based on how Qi is flowing through the body. Much like Circadian rhythm. In a holistic health approach, we must consider all aspects as we optimize health. This includes Time.
