Holistic Mental Health Treatments

Holistic mental health treatments

It is heartening to see that the stigma surrounding mental illness continues to dissipate and that there is more growing interest in holistic approaches to help those who suffer from mental illness. Holistic mental health treatments include a number of therapeutic approaches that do not promote pharmaceuticals. As the article points out, pharmaceuticals certainly have their place but it is a very individual decision.

While access to mental health medications abounds and that availability has helped break the stigma surrounding mental health care,

some patients are seeking out non-pharmaceutical approaches to mental health management — either with or without supplemental medication.

Mental health practitioners refer to these approaches as holistic, or integrative. They look beyond the diagnosis to other factors in a patient’s life, from relationship strength to diet, to form lifestyle changes for the better.

John Stiteler, the owner of Total Health Guidance in Orlando, says positive mental health takes practical and behavioral approaches.

“Medication can be part of that practical part, but it takes a much bigger outlook to really treat a patient holistically,” Stiteler said.

A doctor of naturopathic psychology, Stiteler and his staff analyze many angles of a patient’s life to discover what items may be causing issues in other areas.

“Often we see people dealing with the four big D’s — divorce, debt, depression, diabetes. We don’t just treat the most obvious thing because they are all related,” Stiteler said.

The practice offers services like acupuncture and detox massage, nutritional advice, relapse prevention and counseling.“We are by no means opposed to medication. In some cases, it’s needed. We try to educate and make medication a bridge and not a crutch,” Stiteler said.

Lupus and your gut microbiome

Lupus and the Gut Microbiome

The podcast explores the relationship between lupus and gut microbiome, emphasizing how gut health may influence autoimmune responses in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Research indicates that dietary changes, particularly the Mediterranean diet, and strategies like probiotics could potentially improve SLE management by modulating gut bacteria, although more studies are needed.
