Social Determinants Impede Care
Social determinants in healthcare are those things like employment, education, housing, nutrition, etc. that impact health. We have known for years that social determinants impede care. Unfortunately, to paraphrase author Charles Dudley Warner, everybody knows that social determinants impact health, but nobody does anything about it.
However, that may be changing. Nearly 90% of physicians surveyed recognize the problem and more payers are starting to offer programs to address social determinants in health.
Nearly 90% of U.S. physicians say at least some of their patients have a social condition that poses a serious impediment to their health whether it be unemployment, lack of education or drug addiction, a new nationwide survey of doctors shows.
The biennial survey from the Physicians Foundation shows 88% of physicians have at least “some” patients impacted by social determinants of health and more than half of physicians said that “many or all of their patients have such an impediment.” The survey, which includes responses from more than 9,000 physicians, is conducted by physician staffing and recruitment firm MerrittHawkins
The survey comes at a time the healthcare industry is placing more emphasis on addressing social determinants of health from food insecurity and transportation to affordable housing and insurers like Aetna, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealth Group and Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans are paying for more ways to address them.
