Welcome to your journey into better Health!

We at HealthCare Too are honored that you have considered us in your search for better health and well-being. Please enjoy.

Is Tai Chi For Me?

Ultimately, the answer to this is up to you and your healthcare provider.

The short answer is that you do not have to be in shape to practice Tai Chi. Of course, if your healthcare provider has concerns you must consider those.

Tai Chi has been practiced by young and old, thin and heavy, well and ill for centuries. There are even modern adaptations for those who prefer to be seated while practicing.

The duration is really up to you. There are different “schools” of Tai Chi and each has its own form so the answer can vary.

However, some of the “simplified” forms like the 37 Postures from Cheng Man-ch’ing can take as little as 10 minutes or can take hours as you explore and refine the form.

The health and well-being benefits of Tai Chi have been long-known in China and are now gaining popularity in Western countries.

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine (NCCIH) maintains research into Tai Chi and believes “These exercise therapies are generally considered safe, self-care approaches used to promote a healthy lifestyle.”

Specific benefits include:

  • Promotes Mindfulness & Stress Reduction
  • Helping Parkinson’s Patients Maintain Balance & Avoid Falls
  • Benefits For Fibromyalgia
  • Reducing Falls & Improving Gait Among Elderly
  • Complementary Treatments For Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis

A qualified instructor can be hard to find and even when you find one, you may want additional instruction to help keep things fresh as you progress.

If you find a qualified instructor, ask him / her about videos that might be help your journey into Tai Chi practice.

You can also find a options for DVDs and streaming media here at HealthCare Too.

You can practice Tai Chi in a chair.

You can practice Tai Chi in an open field.

You can practice Tai Chi in a hotel room.

You can practice Tai Chi by the ocean.

Your needs and desires determine what is a relaxed environment.

There are “uniforms” that some who practice Tai Chi enjoy wearing.

Others prefer athletic wear or plain ol’ sweat pants and t-shirt.

Whatever you wear should give you a feeling a comfort and openness. This has to fit you and you alone, figuratively and literally.

Keep in mind where you intend to practice Tai Chi. A smooth floor in a gymnasium might call for a slip-resistant sole. Outdoors might offer the opportunity to wear kung fu shoes. While the beach may beckon for bare feet.

If practicing standing, Tai Chi postures require you to shift weight from one foot to the other. You want footwear to support that.

If you wish to practice seated Tai Chi, you will need a sturdy chair that you trust.

If you normally need support of any type in walking or standing, please arrange for similar support while you practice Tai Chi if standing.

While Tai Chi has been often described as a “moving meditation”, sometimes its just nice to have props to help you focus.

Some of the things we and our customers have enjoyed include:

  • Relaxing music
  • Natural sounds
  • Aromatherapy
  • Mirrors to observe progress
  • A warm cup of tea waiting at the end of practice
  • Books on Tai Chi and past masters
